My Snoopy loves the Fourth of July. He loves the company, he loves the trips to the dog park, he loves the fact that I usually forget to put the grilled burgers out of reach on the picnic table......
But he DOESN'T love the fireworks. You Groovy Dog People people know what I'm talking about. We all know this dog: fearless protector of the territory, defender of the house, quivering mass of jelly whenever there's a thunderstorm. Or fireworks. My poor boy! The rest of the pack doesn't seem to give a rats behind, but once the BOOMS start Snoopy clings to me like Saran Wrap.
My chihuahua laughs at him with contempt. (pssst: she's scared of frogs)
Seriously though, poor Snoopy isn't alone. In fact, according to the ASPCA, July 5 is the busiest day for animal shelters in the USA. Dogs, freaked out by fireworks, panic and run off. I've never experienced THAT horror, but I do know the heartbreak of having to console a fearful, trembling friend.
For some totally groovy tips for easing your pet's anxiety on the fourth, check out this great article from Dog Heirs: Tips to Keep Dogs Safe During Fireworks Celebrations.
And remember, if you're planning on going out of town on July 4th weekend and are in need of pet care, you might better book your reservations now since boarding facilities tend to get filled up during holiday weekends. Or, if you prefer to leave your pets safe at home, you can always look into hiring a pet sitter. I know a really groovy one.
Happy Fourth of July!!!
