Help Us Finish This Journey
One year ago, when I first met Sheira, I couldn't even APPROACH her on a leash. We met in the yard outside her caretaker's apartment and she lunged repeatedly, snarling at me the entire time. I never made it inside. I dropped a muzzle off later and instructed Jadelyn how to put it on. The next time we met wasn't much better, but at least she wasn't able to kill me!
Next day, I was able to go into Jadelyn's apartment, but Sheira lunged at me so much she wore a mark on her nose from banging the muzzle against me so much. Without the muzzle, she would've mauled me.
Jadelyn taught her some basic training skills and gave her some calming exercises, and today I can roll around on the floor with Sheira and play with her without a muzzle. We've even gone to the dog park with my boy Ringo, and they eventually learned to get along. But strangers, especially if they're approaching her while she's near Jadelyn, and other strange dogs are still in danger. The initial training period had some success, but she needs so much more.
Desensitization and Counter-Conditioning can be a long process, especially for dogs as stressed as Sheira. She was a shelter rescue, and she spent the first six months with Jadelyn virtually alone (Jade was new to Tallahassee when she adopted Sheira, so she had no acquaintances to socialize Sheira to, resulting in an extreme single-bonding / separation anxiety situation, with all others being potential interlopers. Sheira's original training commitment expired long ago, and I've been working with her and Jadelyn very sporadically the past few months, and for free. She needs some intensive work, but neither of us have been able to afford it.
Please help us finish Sheira's journey to feel safe and BE SAFE. This is a wonderful dog with a terrific and committed owner, and they need our help.
